Lewis & Kappes: Counselors and Attorneys at Law
Our Firm's History
The law firm of Lewis & Kappes was created one night in 1985 over dinner and a handshake. Two premier Indianapolis business attorneys — Ted Lewis and Phil "Skip" Kappes — decided to bring their experience and skills to a small firm setting, dedicated to quality representation and the establishment of close client relationships. Although the firm has grown considerably since that time, we have maintained the standards of legal distinction and client responsiveness exemplified by our founding partners.
Many of our attorneys have been honored as Super Lawyers and Rising Stars in Indianapolis Monthly magazine and two were named Trial Lawyers of the Year by the Indiana Trial Lawyers Association. Lewis & Kappes attorneys have chaired the Utility Law, Immigration, and Appellate Sections of the Indiana State Bar Association, and have been active as leaders in a wide array of professional civic and charitable organizations.
At Lewis & Kappes, we strive to provide effective legal services with the performance and technical resources of a large firm, while retaining the personal client interaction and cost-effectiveness of a small firm.
Our firm is not compartmentalized in a rigid organizational structure. Rather, our Indiana attorneys and office staff work together as a team to serve the interests of our clients. This allows us to adapt to developments and react quickly and efficiently to pressing concerns, while placing the diverse experience and expertise of the entire firm at the client's disposal.
Our most important resource is human. Our support staff of paralegals and legal assistants enables us to serve clients as efficiently and economically as possible, and to maintain personal contact with clients under any circumstances.
Pro Bono Activities and Community Involvement
Lewis & Kappes actively supports pro bono and civic activities throughout Indiana. Our pro bono policy calls for each lawyer to devote 50 hours of representation on pro bono legal matters each year. Our professionals represent individuals, children in need of services, families, civic, charitable, and other not-for-profit organizations in pro bono matters.
Affiliations and Memberships
Our legal services are complemented by four independent organizations with which we are associated:
- Indiana Industrial Energy Consumers Inc. ("INDIEC") is an association of large-volume energy consumers in Indiana. A Lewis & Kappes attorney serves as Executive Director and General Counsel for INDIEC, which is regularly represented by Lewis & Kappes attorneys.
- The Lewis & Kappes Governmental Relations Group, LLC provides representation in connection with legislative affairs, lobbying, agency relations, governmental procurements and grass roots coalitions.
- Lewis & Kappes is also a member of the Law Firm Alliance, a national and international network of midsized firms. Through the Law Firm Alliance, we are able to call on reliable professionals for support in a diverse range of subjects and localities. The members of the Law Firm Alliance have demonstrated skill, experience and the highest professional standards, and all of the member firms have achieved the highest "AV" rating by the Martindale Hubbell Peer Review Rating system. Being a member of the Alliance provides us with the capability to call on experienced professionals throughout the United States and in a number of international locations, in order to provide clients with reliable support and services whenever and wherever there is a need.
- In connection with its commercial lending practice, Lewis & Kappes is an Associate Member of the National Association of Government Guaranteed Lenders (NAAGL).
