Skip Kappes Honored As "Legendary Lawyer" By Indiana Bar Foundation
Philip "Skip" Kappes, co-founder of Lewis & Kappes, has been honored by the Fellows of the Indiana Bar Foundation as the recipient of the "Legendary Lawyer" award for 2006. The award is given annually to one individual whose contributions have demonstrated the highest commitment to genuine professionalism and the highest standards of the legal profession. To be eligible for the award, the Legendary Lawyer must have demonstrated adherence to the highest principles and traditions of the legal profession, compassion through service to the public in the community and practical skills in the practice of law, through a legal career of 50 years or more.
The Legendary Lawyer Award recognizes Mr. Kappes' long and distinguished record of commitment and dedication to the profession and the community. He is a current member, past president and former member of the Board of Managers of the Indianapolis Bar Association. His service to the Indiana State Bar Association includes serving on the House of Delegates and as secretary on the Board of Managers. He also served on the House of Delegates of the American Bar Association and is a Fellow of the Indianapolis and American Bar Associations and the Indiana Bar Foundation. He is a member of the honorary fraternity, Tau Kappa Alpha, the American Judicature Society, the Lawyers Club of Indianapolis and the Lawyers Association of Indianapolis. He has been and is active in a number of community service organizations, serving as a past President of both the Children's Museum Board of Trustees and the Central Indiana Council Boy Scouts of America, a trustee of Butler University , and a past chairman of the board of Fairbanks Hospital . Additionally, Mr. Kappes serves as the Chairman of the Board of the Scottish Rite Children's Learning Center and a director of the Indianapolis Scottish Rite Cathedral Foundation. He also remains active with his college fraternity at Butler , Phi Delta Theta, serving as a chapter advisor.
The Indiana Bar Foundation is a charitable organization devoted to strengthening access to justice and appreciation for the rule of law in Indiana . The Foundation provides funding for programming promoting law, scholarships for law-related education and sponsorship of awards for legal excellence. Prior to this year, the Legendary Lawyer Award was known as the "50-Year Award." The name change reflects a recognition that recipients have not only practiced law for 50 years, but due to their legal and community activities have come to be revered as "living legends." Mr. Kappes is the 26th recipient of the award.
The Legendary Lawyer Award caps the honors and awards Mr. Kappes has received for his distinguished service to the legal profession and his community. Mr. Kappes also has been the recipient of: the Buchanan Award of Excellence from the Indianapolis Bar Association as well as the Award for Improvement in the Judicial System from the Indianapolis Bar Association's Board of Managers; the Golden Career Award from the Indiana State Bar Association; and the Mortar Award from the Butler University Alumni Association and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Butler University.
In presenting the Legendary Lawyer Award to Mr. Kappes, Jack Hittle, the President of the Indiana Bar Foundation, thanked Mr. Kappes for his "lifelong service to the profession and your community and for epitomizing the highest ideals of professionalism, generosity and commitment."
