Greenwood Band Tunes up for 11th Season
A community band of uncommon loyalty and dedication. How many endeavors do you know that mix 18 year olds with 83 year olds?
Duane O'Neal, an attorney at Lewis & Kappes in Indianapolis, was nostalgic for his long-gone musical days. He'd played the saxophone in high school but anymore was awash in heavy-duty legal flotsam.
That was 1993. To make a long story short, O'Neal, after finding no musical ensemble in the area, approached Jon Sutton, director of bands at Greenwood High School, about forming an adult community band. Sutton thought it was a great idea but didn't have the time which such a venture would require. For the position of organizer and director, he recommended Dr. Joe Naumcheff, a retired Ball State University trumpet instructor and administrator.
The rest is history.
Announcements in the local papers enticed 27 brave-but-rusty musicians out of their family rooms. Its first summer concert of this season took place at the Greenwood Amphitheater on June 1, 2003.
Enthusiasm for the band is reflected in its rapid growth from the original 27 to the present 81 members. The age range is from 18 - 83. Most of the musicians are from Greenwood or the surrounding area, but one very enthusiastic member lives in Hagerstown and drives over an hour to attend rehearsals. The Band is also fortunate to attract many fine musicians, including current and past area Band directors.
