Jack Wickes Honored as a Sagamore of the Wabash

(INDIANAPOLIS, Dec. 28, 2004) - Jack Wickes, Director, recently received the Sagamore of the Wabash Award as an individual who has greatly contributed to Indiana heritage. The award was presented by Tom McKenna on behalf of Indiana Governor Joe Kernan in a reception at the Skyline Club in the presence of family and friends. The Sagamore of the Wabash is the highest honor the Indiana Governor can bestow on an individual. The term was used by Native Americans to describe a great person to whom the chief would look for wisdom and advice. It was created by Governor Ralph Gates in the late 1940s and has been given to astronauts, Presidents, ambassadors, artists, musicians, and politicians.
