Tuchman Named to City's Historic Preservation Commission

Local attorney brings varied expertise to post

Prominent local attorney Steven L. Tuchman has been appointed by Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson to the board of the Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission.

Tuchman is a partner with local law firm Lewis & Kappes. His practice consists mainly of immigration law and real estate law. He is a 1971 graduate of the Indiana University Indianapolis School of Law, and has been active in local arts circles. The Historic Preservation Commission ("IHPC") is tasked with preserving the character and fabric of historically significant areas and structures for all present and future citizens of Marion County.

The IHPC accomplishes this task by protecting areas through local designation and technical assistance on restoration and rehabilitation of historic structures or areas. Those areas include historic districts such as Chatham-Arch, Lockerbie Square, Lockefield Gardens, Old Northside, Fletcher Place, St. Joseph, Fountain Square, Wholesale District, and Herron-Morton Place. Other areas are conservation districts such as Fayette Street, Ransom Place, and New Augusta. Examples of individual properties are Hilbert Circle Theater, Eastman-Lilly House, Hannah-Oehler House, Hollingsworth House, Ruskaup-Ratcliffe House and Store, and Union Station.
