La Plaza is a non-profit organization which serves the Hispanic/Latino community of Indianapolis in the areas of social services, education, cultural activities and economic development. Beginning December 31, 2004, three non-profit organizations that served the Hispanic/Latino community merged through a two-phase process to form La Plaza. These include Fiesta Indianapolis, the Hispanic Education Center, and the Hispanic Center. The Indianapolis Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will partner with the newly formed La Plaza to provide support to Hispanic/Latino businesses.
The Mayor's Commission on Latino Affairs (MCOLA) was created by Mayor Bart Peterson in February of 2000. The purpose of MCOLA is to increase Latino involvement in city government and make city services more accessible to all Indianapolis residents. MCOLA works with the Mayor and members of the Indianapolis area to address issues of particular concern to the Hispanic/Latino community, such as access to city services, educational issues, and reducing the language barrier. It also supports local efforts to improve race relations and better understanding between the Latino community and the city as a whole.
